The Brockport Yacht Club is primarily a sailing club, located on the South Shore of Lake Ontario, near the mouth of Sandy Creek. It is,
and always has been, a "Do-It-Yourself" club, in which the members take an active role in the activities and upkeep of the Club and the property. We have an active Wednesday evening, Holiday, and Special Events racing program , and a jr. sailing program that is designed to introduce youngsters to sailing.
Members take an active role in organizing and running these programs.
As you become more familiar with the club, you will learn that it is a family oriented, community of members that enjoy sharing the sailing experience.
If you are interested in becoming a member, it is important, that you both understand the basic tenets of the club and be willing to
be a part of them on becoming a member. In general, members are expected to:
assist in the operation and maintenance of the club
regularly attend the monthly business meetings
attend work parties
regularly attend club social activities
Over the years, we have found that the camaraderie of the members is strengthened, when members work together to maintain and improve the club's facilities. To accomplish much of the work that is required to make the club successful, work parties are held for the club opening in the Spring, the club closing in the Fall, and during the winter months when work is done to replace or repair the docks, while the basin is frozen over. Still other work parties are held occasionally to accomplish special needs that arise during the year. This is an important part of being a member, and members are expected to be present at work parties. Members should feel privileged to be able to participate, and enjoy the opportunity to work alongside the other members.
The club is self governing by a executive committee made up of the club's flag officers and a board of trustees. As members become more involved in the club's activities, they may wish to serve as an officer or trustee.
Regular "business" meetings are held monthly on the last Thursday of the month from January through October to conduct such business as might be needed during the course of the year to ensure that the club functions smoothly. The "Annual Meeting" for the purpose of electing officers and presenting the budget for that years operations is held during the January meeting. In November, an awards banquet is held to present present special recognition to members who have earned it in one form or another. Members are expected to attend these meetings, and stay abreast of the club's goings on.
Members enjoy the friendships they develop at the club and the many occasions to attend the social gatherings that are held during the year. Unfortunately, the club facilities are somewhat limited. There is only so much parking available. There is only so much room available for entertaining one's family and friends. Members are expected to use good judgment, when inviting guests, especially on holiday weekends and during special events, so as to not deny other members use of the parking and facilities. Members are also expected to monitor the actions of and be present on the grounds when their children, their guests, or the children of their guests are present.
The Brockport Yacht Club is one of a number of members of the Sandy Creek Beach Association. As a member and good neighbor, we have a responsibility to be considerate of the needs of our neighbors as we would expect them to be considerate of our needs. One very specific need, in this area is that of adhering to the 5 MPH Speed Limit when using the private access road leading to the club property in the vicinity of the cottages on the road.
The Brockport Yacht Club is a self sustaining, not-for-profit organization, whose operational expenses are shared equally by all members. Members are expected to pay all dues and assessments promptly when due.
If you feel that this is the type of club that you would like to be a part of, please complete the on-line membership request form and we'll have one of the members contact you to assist you in finding a sponsor.
